When water enters your home or office, it’s necessary to begin a water damage restoration project immediately. Why? Waiting can cause extensive damage to your home or office by the presence of mold growth. How can water come into the home causing you to do a water damage restoration project?

There’s three particular ways that water causes damage to buildings that forces owners to do a water damage restoration project. They include: roof leaks, plumbing leaks and basement leaks.

Causes of Roof Leaks

What are some of the causes of roof leaks that would lead to water damage restoration?

* If sealing around chimneys, vent pipes, skylights or any such roofing is missing or worn away, this can be a cause for roof leaks.
* When it rains outside and rain is driven by wind inside the house, it usually does so through chimneys, underneath shingles and through a home’s siding.

* A roof may leak due to being installed improperly or has the wrong kind of roofing for the home.

* Rainwater will collect when the roof is sagging or has broken rafters thus leading to a roof leak on down the road.
* Gutter drains that have not been cleaned out are another culprit to roof leaks.

Any of these causes will need to be taken care of so you will not have to commence a water damage restoration project. Make sure you find the source of the water if a roof leak is occurring before you start on any sort of cleanup or you will repeatedly doing a cleanup.

Causes of Plumbing Leaks

When a plumbing leak occurs, there are several ways it can occur in newer and older homes. Those in newer homes usually have problems due to plastic pipes failing or a plumbing system that has failed. Older homes tend to have problems when it comes to pipes being rusted or corroded.

Be sure plumbing fixtures in the home are maintained regularly and you check out your sewer and water lines at least once a year.

Causes of Basement Leaks

Whenever a basement leaks, it can lead to more hazardous problems, including mold and mildew. There are all kinds of culprits that can lead to a water damage restoration project in this area of the home.

Some causes include but are certainly not limited to:

* Water left on floor

* Water coming through the foundation’s walls and floor

* Buckling of floor tiles and wood
* Basement air that is damp and humid

Keep an eye out for ongoing problems in the basement and fix them immediately so you can avoid having to do a restoration project.

Should you have to do a water damage restoration project, you can always fix the problem yourself. Just be sure to take the necessary precautions. Treat the water as if it is contaminated with bacteria and germs even if it is not sewage. Wear clothing that can be sealed with duct tape. Use goggles, rubber gloves, rubber boots and masks to do this project.

You can also find experts in your local community to do the job for you. If you choose to have an expert take care of the problem, make sure you check the business out before allowing workers to start the job.

If it looks like the job is going to get costly (and it can be), bring out your insurance policy. Call your homeowner’s insurance agent and see if the damage is covered. Most insurance companies won’t cover damage from water unless you purchase a side coverage specifically geared to water damage.
