A sewage backup occurs when an old sewer system that is being currently used is blocked by something which was carried by a strong water surge during a storm. The effluence which comes from a sewage backup spillage has many organic and toxic materials that could damage properties like a basement wherein the sewer lines are usually built and connected underneath.
Cleaning out the mess associated with a sewage backup is not only disgusting to say the least, but is also quite laborious because it takes time to remove the water and the solid organic materials that are in it. It also takes time to thoroughly clean and dry the place out not to mention performing disinfecting procedures that are required to eliminate harmful bacteria.
Problems occur when the storm water systems are built within a common pipeline. When rains and storm come, the volume of water present is more than what the pipeline can usually handle. Consequently, this leads to sewage spillage that comes out of basements and low lying water or canal drains that are located within the same area. Another common cause of sewage backup and overflow is the construction of more infrastructures and houses that are connected to existent sewage systems that are already old.
It is quite unfortunate that funds appropriated by the government which are allocated for the improvement, change and addition of new sewer systems have decreased and the demand expected out of the said old sewer system has definitely increased. It is common knowledge that a sewage backup or overflow is a serious threat to the health of household owners and the entire community because of the pollution it gives.
The raw sewage effluent contains E coli, viruses and parasites that make people ill and sick. The most common sicknesses which are generally found when there is a sewage backup problem are diarrhea, hepatitis, cholera, ad gastroenteritis. Most have something to do with the digestive system, typically because this has something to do with the ingestion of dirty water that may have seeped into the main pipes of the clean water line.
Homeowners who are still connected to aging sewage lines and who are often victimized by backup flows usually dole out money from their own personal savings and pockets to have repairs implemented. Most are advised to replace the lines from their house going into the street. However, if the sewer line at the street where the newly replaced line from the house is connected has backup problems, the new line will still allow the sewage to backup like before since they run in the same connection. There are also times that if the pressures within the said lines are very strong, it could throw off a manhole cover and shoot up about four feet of sewage content into the air, creating a whole lot of messy fluid and unbearable stench. The gagging smell that comes from the sewage is caused by the mixture of gases that come from various degradable materials which are broken down by bacteria, thus this may also cause respiration problems once it has been in an area for quite sometime and nothing has been done to eradicate the problem.
